Sunyani is the capital town of the Bono Region of Ghana. Surrounded by the forested Southern Ashanti Uplands, the city of Sunyani originally developed as an outpost camp for elephant hunters during the 19th century. The name Sunyani is derived from the Akan word for elephant: ‘Osono,’ and the area is an important hub for the distribution of cocoa, kola nuts, and staple foods such maize and yam. In 1924, The British colonial government designated Sunyani as district headquarters following the construction of roads connecting it with the city of Kumasi. Since then, the city has attracted a number of people and investments.

Today Sunyani is home to both the regional government and high court. The region’s post-secondary institutions are also based in the city; including one polytechnic school and two universities. Several of the country’s best primary, secondary and technical schools can be found within Sunyani and its suburbs attracting students from throughout the region and beyond. Because it has everything you need in a city without being big and crazy, Sunyani is an amazing place live. The city being often quiet for the most part with its low crime rate, great food and affordable living, these are the reasons why Sunyani is such an awesome place to relocate.

  • Sunyani seems to have been designed by very thoughtful town planners as the city is well planned and as such not prone to floods. Suburbs include; Abessim, Fiapre, Berlin Top, South Ridge, SSNIT Flat, Airport Residential Area among others. All the banks you can think of in Ghana have branches there. It isn’t a village if someone told you so. It’s a safe haven. A place where you can escape the daily hassle we experience in the capital city.
  • Transportation is affordable as well as easily accessible. The layout of the main roads makes sense and it is easy to get around. Sunyani is a seven hour drive from Accra and it can also boast of an Airport. Taxi fares are very reasonable and “tro-tros” is very easy to come by as well. The taxi drivers are also very friendly. Ghanaians are generally hospitable but the people of Sunyani are more than hospitable. They tell you stories upon stories.
  • There is NO TRAFFIC! How awesome is that??  Don’t you just hate traffic? Everyone does! Sitting in a car for long hours frustrates me more than any other thing. Living in a great city with no traffic is probably the best thing ever. You get to actually be at places on time. Just think about it.
  • The place is neat and not densely populated. As we all know about the state of the environment in Ghana, the number of people in cities like Accra and Kumasi outnumbers the infrastructure or facilities in place and there is dirt everywhere. Sunyani is different as it is neat and homely. There is no problem with accommodation as well. Renting accommodation is moderately cheaper. Oh, and don’t get me started on the weather!! It is either cloudy, raining, drizzling or rarely scorching hot. The city experiences a double maxima rainfall pattern-the main rainy season between March and September and the minor between October and December.
  • The people of Sunyani are absolutely great. The city has one of the finest people on earth. The Bono and Ahafo people with their inborn hospitality characters coupled with an all-beautiful Akan culture makes the place a unique location in Ghana. Their overriding humane spirit is endearing. You will come across people whose humanity and compassion shines thoroughly. Who doesn’t like being around amazing people!

Known as the green city of Ghana, Sunyani can pride itself for its fluidity. There is an airport, affordable housing, beautiful scenery, affordable living standard, great financial and educational institutions and hospitals. What more can you ask for?? For families and lovers who need some time to themselves you will enjoy Sunyani. If you happen to be in town on New Year, don’t miss the annual Kojo Antwi Concert. To those looking to relocate, WELCOME TO THE SUN-CITY!!
